IST Enhances Tourism Students’ Data Analysis Skills through SPSS Training
Hands-on training strengthens students’ competencies in questionnaire design, statistical data analysis, hypothesis testing and result interpretation, supporting both academic research and professional applications.
The International School of Tourism (IST), Suratthani Rajabhat University, through the Tourism and Hospitality Management Program, organized the “SPSS Statistical Data Analysis Training Program” for second- to fourth-year students to strengthen their analytical skills and their ability to apply statistical knowledge in tourism and hospitality contexts.
Developing students with both academic knowledge and professional competencies is an important part of tourism and hospitality education. In today’s tourism industry, data plays an increasingly significant role in decision-making, tourist behavior analysis, customer satisfaction assessment, opinion surveys and service quality evaluation.
The SPSS Statistical Data Analysis Training Program therefore focuses on practice-based learning and provides students with opportunities to develop essential data analysis skills. The training covers research instrument development, variable definition and data coding, data-file creation, fundamental statistical analysis, instrument quality assessment and hypothesis testing.
From Raw Data to Practical Skills
Questionnaire and Research Instrument Development
Students learn about question types, variables, data coding and different types of data, while developing a systematic approach to preparing information before entering it into SPSS.
Fundamental Statistical Analysis
Participants practice calculating frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations, as well as developing composite variables for further statistical analysis.
Instrument Quality Assessment and Hypothesis Testing
The training introduces group-based statistical analysis, hypothesis formulation and tests of differences between means, helping students understand how to select statistical methods appropriate to their data.
Result Interpretation and Professional Application
Students practice examining relationships among qualitative and quantitative variables, interpreting statistical results and applying findings to tourism, hospitality and research contexts.
The program targets 128 second- to fourth-year students in Tourism and Hospitality Management. The activities are held at Banburi Room, Dipangkorn Rasmijoti Building, Suratthani Rajabhat University, providing an appropriate environment for hands-on computer-based learning.
