International School of Tourism Upholds Thai Tradition by Joining the 2025 Candle Festival, Conserving Local Cultural Heritage

On July 9, 2025, the International School of Tourism (IST) at Surat Thani Rajabhat University (SRU), led by its faculty, staff, and students, participated in the traditional Candle Festival procession for the year 2025. The event was organized by the Office of Arts and Culture of SRU to present Lent candles and perform the candle-lit circumambulation ceremony at Wat Phukhao Thong and Wat Sila Suwannaram in Mueang Surat Thani District.

The atmosphere of the event was imbued with the beauty of Thai culture. The exquisitely decorated candle procession moved along its designated route, with students from the International School of Tourism taking part, reflecting their faith in Buddhism and a sincere commitment to preserving this revered tradition for future generations.

This activity was not merely about offering candles as a Buddhist act of merit for Asalha Puja Day and the Buddhist Lent period. It also served as a significant extracurricular learning experience, instilling in students an appreciation for the value of cultural heritage, promoting morals and ethics, and fostering unity among students and the local community.

Alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The International School of Tourism recognizes that the preservation of arts and culture is an integral part of sustainable development. This participation aligns with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in several key areas:

  • Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

    • Target 11.4: "Strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage." Participating in and promoting the Candle Festival is a direct action to protect Thailand's Intangible Cultural Heritage.

  • Goal 4: Quality Education

    • Target 4.7: Ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including through education for the appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development. This event provides students with direct learning experiences in cultural values and ethics.

  • Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

    • As a leading institution in tourism education, promoting local cultural events also supports "Cultural Tourism." This is a vital driver for creating community income and fostering sustainable local economic growth.

The International School of Tourism, Surat Thani Rajabhat University, remains committed to encouraging student participation in activities that preserve the nation's fine arts, culture, and traditions. Our goal is to develop graduates who are not only professionally competent but also possess high moral standards and a profound sense of responsibility towards society and culture.
